Coffee Table by Alain Richard, Charron Group 4, 1954

About the Item

Coffee table by Alain Richard, Charron Groupe 4, 1954. Alain Richard did not design the cut-out of this table from scratch: an armchair can easily be fitted into it and its occupant then has a very large surface to place books, papers, ashtrays, etc. Alain Richard (1926 - 2017) is a famous French designer who quickly established himself as one of the most brilliant representatives of his generation. After graduating from the École nationale des arts décoratifs in 1949, he joined the agency of René Gabriel, his former teacher, before going into exile in the Netherlands when Gabriel died. The young designer then worked with Hein Salomonson's firm before setting up his own design office in Paris in 1952 with his wife Jacqueline Iribe, a designer of furnishing textiles. With a rigorous functionalism, his first pieces of furniture were first published by Lavrilleux and Charron, then by Meubles TV, where Alain Richard worked and signed several designs with André Monpoix. Together they designed the Banquette 195 (1954). A success among others rewarded by the Milan Triennial Prize in 1954 and, ten years later, by the René Gabriel Prize. Alain Richard's talented career continued in the 1970s with frequent commissions from the Mobilier National, the design of numerous museums, as well as projects for large hotel groups, winter sports resorts and the BNP, which entrusted him with the design of numerous prestigious branches throughout the world. At the end of his career he devoted himself to teaching.

Aquilon teak coffee table by Pierre Guariche, Les Huchers-Minvielle, 1960 Rare Aquilon furniture by Pierre Guariche Pierre Guariche (1926 - 1995) is one of the legendary French designers of the 1950s, who left his mark on his era with purely aesthetic, functional and accessible pieces. A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs, he published his first designs on his own, including the famous Rotaflex lamp, which he exhibited at the Salon des Arts ménagers and then at the Salon des Artistes décorateurs. It was a great success with the public, and soon attracted the interest of publishers. Pierre Guariche went on to create furniture, lighting and decorative objects for Airborne, Pierre Disderot and Steiner. In 1954, he also joined forces with decorators Michel Mortier and Joseph-André Motte, with whom he founded the Atelier de recherche plastique. ARP went on to create furniture for Charles Minvielle's living room, dining room and bedroom. At the end of the 1950s, as artistic director of the Belgian furniture company Meurop, he gradually turned to interior design. In 1965, he was awarded the Prix René Gabriel. Pierre Guariche's original creations have become iconic pieces such as the Amsterdam chair...
