About the Item
This captivating Brasilia-inspired coffee table, attributed to Donald Drumm, embodies the raw, expressive energy of Brutalist design from the 1960s. Hand-welded from solid aluminum, the base features a striking geometric composition of curved, intersecting forms that evoke the architectural dynamism of Brazil’s modernist capital. The sculptural supports, with their textured, hand-finished surfaces, converge at a central circular hub, creating a sense of movement and balance beneath the sleek, round glass top. The transparent surface allows the intricate base to take center stage, showcasing Drumm’s signature approach to metalwork. A perfect blend of form and function, this piece is a bold statement for collectors or interiors seeking a touch of mid-century avant-garde sophistication.
Donald Drumm (1935–2024) was an American sculptor and designer renowned for his pioneering work in metal, particularly aluminum, during the mid-20th century. Based in Akron, Ohio, Drumm began his career in the 1950s after studying at Kent State University, where he honed his skills in sculpture and design. He became a leading figure in the Brutalist movement, known for his hand-welded aluminum pieces that often featured abstract, organic forms inspired by nature and modernist architecture. Drumm’s work ranged from large-scale public sculptures to functional art, such as tables and lighting, often characterized by textured surfaces and bold, geometric shapes. His studio in Akron remains a testament to his legacy, producing works that continue to captivate collectors and designers worldwide.
