Italian 1960s Coffee Table In Plexiglass And Brass Romeo Rega Style

About the Item

Particular and interesting plexiglass coffee table. The sturdy cube-shaped structure is made of brushed brass with a sheet of plexiglass at the top forms the top of the table, one acts as a base and another is placed in the middle as a support surface. In each of the slabs on the four sides of the cube has been made a large hole in the circle that helps to make the entire structure aesthetically lighter and original. For the realization has been used a beautiful colored plexiglass fake turtle. The coffee table was created between 1968 and 1970 by a Roman craftsman in the Magliana district in Hollywood Regency style inspired by the works of Romeo Rega. Romeo Rega (1925-1984) was a Roman designer who distinguished himself during his forty-year career as a pioneer and protagonist at national and international level of the golden years of "Italian Design". He designed and built for Cinecittà the chariots for the film Ben-Hur, American colossal of 1959. The '70s represent a real revolution for the Italian cultural scene, they are the "golden years" of design, and Romeo is able to apply for his creations, with ingenuity and creativity, the traditional methods of processing to new industrial materials such as Plexiglas, brass and steel. Plexiglas is a plastic material, whose "real" name is Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) or even more simply Methacrylate, derived from the name of its structural polymers. Plexiglas is the best known commercial name, which has become commonly used today. The inventor of this material was Otto Karl Julius Röhm, a German chemist who made it in 1928 and it was later commercialized in 1933 by the German industry Röhm. In 1936, the first acrylic sheet was made under the name Perspex, which means "to see through." In fact, one of its most appreciated characteristics is its transparency and it is often used as an alternative to glass also for its unbreakability. These characteristics, together with the fact that it is a ductile and versatile material, and that it can also be processed in large sheets, mean that Plexiglas lends itself easily to different types of processing and is used in different sectors. It is also known by the trade names of Plexiglas, Perspex, Amanite, Lucite, Trespex, Vitroflex, Acrivill, Perclax, Limacryl, Crylux, Oroglas, Setacryl, Altuglas. it is soft, sensitive to scratches and abrasions that can be easily eliminated thanks to specific polishes. The table is in good condition, has some light scratches that, as mentioned above, can be easily removed. Measures width cm. 50, depth cm.50, height cm.52.For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects. Dimensions 30 cm x 30 cm x 14 cm. Since 1921, VENINI has transformed precious silica sand into molten glass, which is then blown and crafted by hand, reflecting the perfect balance between traditional techniques and contemporary art and design. Precious “Made in Murano” creations that stem from centuries of skill and knowledge. TONI ZUCCHERI was born in San Vito al Tagliamento (Pordenone) but Venetian by adoption, Toni Zuccheri (1936-2008) trained at the school of his father Luigi, an animalist painter, and graduated in Architecture in Venice in 1968. Still a student, at the end of 1961 he comes to Venini – to replace his father – to design a glass bestiary that Ludovico de Santillana wanted to create by implementing an idea by Paolo Venini. Thus begins in an almost fortuitous way a collaboration destined to continue over time, albeit in a discontinuous manner. At Venini Zuccheri he devoted himself passionately to research and experimentation on the glass material, acquiring over time considerable familiarity with both hot and cold working techniques.
