Italian Avantgarde Walnut Coffee Table, Attributed to Cesare Lacca for Cassina

About the Item

Little is known about the illustrious designer Cesare Lacca: he was born in Naples in 1929 and he created modernist furniture and metalwork throughout the 1950s. He was part of the exhibition ‘Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today’ that toured 12 US museums between 1950 and 1953. This first major exhibition of Italian design outside of Italy showcased the best Italian designers who combined modernist principles with traditional Italian crafts, such as Carlo Mollino, Franco Albini and Gio Ponti. As little of his work is documented, and he only designed in a shot period in time, a lot of elegant, organically shaped furniture is — perhaps wrongfully — attributed to Lacca. We just don’t know for sure. What we do know is that the listed walnut table is beautifully made, in a lovely vintage condition with wear consistent of age and use. The glass top with etched edges has no chipping. On other websites and auctions, exactly this table has been proudly sold as a Cassina made Cesare Lacca table — and it pretty much could be. General note: Shipping quotes as supplied by 1stdibs are only indicative. We will discuss and figure out the best possible shipment method (and rate) for every individual object.

By RAAK, Otto Wach
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
This stunning R-60 ‘Cricket’ table lamp was designed in 1962 by Otto Wasch for Raak Amsterdam. It consists of a polished metal cilinder with two pins in it, a touch of minimalist genius. By changing the postion of the pins, the lamp can be placed in either a higher or lower postion. Its resemblance with a cricket is uncanny. The listed Cricket lamp is in original condition, wear consistent with age and use. The on- and off switch still at the bottom of the lamp. Wiring and plug have been renewed in the days, it carries a European plug and can be made suitable for use in the USA by changing the plug or using a holiday converter. Set of 4 Galvanitas Oosterhout NV S16 Compass Chairs, Dutch Design, 1950s
By Galvanitas
Located in CULEMBORG, GE
For sale is a lovely set of four Galvanitas S16 Compass Chairs, arguably the most iconic school chair ever produced. The first to design with sheet metal was obviously Jean Prouve, but in The Netherlands the experiments with these classic compass leg subframes really exploded in the 1950s. Friso Kramer and Wim Rietveld designed the similar looking Result Chair for Ahrend in the same period, but the S16 turned out to be the most successful —featuring in most schools and canteens of office- and government buildings. Made from a sheet steel frame with a fine laminated and formed seat and back by Pagholz, the iconic S16 Chair...

Circular Table Attributed to Cesare Lacca
By Cesare Lacca
Located in Henley-on Thames, Oxfordshire
Circular Brass, glass and steel tripod low table attributed to Cesare Lacca. Italy 1950s Cesare Lacca. Born in Naples in 1929, Italian architect and designer Cesare Lacca created countless furniture and metal objects during the 1950s. Although information about his private and professional life is scarce, there are reliable enough sources to document his elegant brass designs – work for which the designer is best known. Like many Italian designers of the 20th century, Lacca moved to Milan after World War II to launch his career. Before the age of 21, Lacca was selected by a group of American curators to be part of the world-famous Italy at Work exhibition, which toured 12 American museums between 1950 and 1953 – the first major Italian design exhibition outside of Italy. The exhibition collects and exhibits the work of the most talented and prominent Italian designers who embrace and develop modernist principles, revolutionizing the Italian artisan tradition, including Carlo Mollino, Franco Albini, and Gio Ponti Lacca designs over the course of his career a large number of tea and service carts (which correspond to most of his pieces available on today’s market), coffee tables, and magazine racks. The designer’s most iconic trolley, produced by the Italian Cassina, is characterized by several carved wood, and brass details, with glass shelf and removable, usable as a tray. In addition to his carts, Lacca is also known for creating high-backed armchairs, which are regularly included in Arredoluce’s advertisements for Angelo Lelli’s lighting...
