About

The top Italian, mid-19th century by F. Betti, Florence, in the manner of Antoni Cioci; the base French, 20th century.

The rectangular porphyry top with lapis lazuli banding and inset to the centre with pietra dura depictions of vases, jugs, flowers, jewelry, shells and a butterfly, set on an ormolu base with blued-steel frieze and a joining scrolling stretcher to the lower section, the top with two circular maker's paper labels to the underside.

This exceptional antique coffee table features an unusual pietra dura inlay, which combines images of the Classical and natural worlds to stunning effect.

A similar table top can be seen in the Ugolini Collection in Florence, illustrated in Massinelli, A.M., The Gilbert Collection, Hardstones (2000) London, p. 110.
