About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the whole description, as we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Elegant and distinctive Italian Art Dèco coffee table; the upper top, circular in shape, is made of Sapele wood and is enriched by an elegant dark smoked glass; the small lower top is also round and also made of Sapele wood; the two tops are connected by three legs made of a light cherry wood, which with their graceful and harmonious design create an aesthetic, streamlined, pleasant and sophisticated whole. The coffee table was made, handcrafted in the Paolo Buffa style, between 1950 and 1955 in Brianza, a historic area of Lombardy (Italy) known for its designer furniture, made with great craftsmanship; we know for a fact that the architect Buffa used Lombard cabinetmakers of recognized skill for the construction of his furniture, who used very refined materials also because the objects were intended mainly for the apartments of the rich Milanese bourgeoisie; our coffee table with its characteristics of quality, accuracy, and finish, was almost certainly made by one of those master craftsmen. Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was an Italian architect and designer known for his mid-century furniture designs. Characterized by a fusion of tradition and modernity, he used a combination of low-profile, straight-curved forms in fine woods to produce his most classic pieces. Paolo Buffa began working in Gio Ponti's studio and later, from 1928, in close collaboration with architect A. Cassi Ramelli. He devoted himself mainly to designing furniture by continually proposing new models. More than a forerunner, he is a faithful spokesman of the taste of his time: neoclassical at first and novecentist later. Paolo Buffa was highly regarded internationally for his refined design and rigorous execution, displaying an expertise that was singularly Italian. Before his death in 1970 in Milan, Italy, Buffa had been named one of the country's leading designers. Sapele is a prestigious wood, with a reddish coloration similar to mahogany, from Equatorial Africa; this sophisticated material has a tight weave and interwoven fibers, fine and uniform, and with a good natural luster; it is a sturdy, rather flexible, hard and compact type of wood, usually used for luxury furniture and cabinetry, but also in the interior decoration of yachts and yachts as well as in sophisticated and expensive musical instruments. Cherry is particularly used in northern Italy as a solid wood (solid wood is that portion of the wood that is extracted from the heartwood, the innermost part of the trunk), it has an excellent aptitude for finishing so it is varnished naturally, so as not to compromise the beauty of the grain. The finish is brilliant whether treated with beeswax or shellac, and these treatments bring out its warm and pleasant color. With the combination of these fine woods and black crystal, the artisans have created a charming, sought-after, and compelling piece of furniture, which, by virtue of its extreme elegance and soft romantic line, makes it versatile and easily placed in any setting. The coffee table has been hand-treated with ancient restoration techniques by our team of craftsmen and is in excellent condition. Measures cm.55 diameter, cm.60 height. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (custom-made wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the items.
