About the Item

Paul Evans MCM Brutalist Bronze Stalagmite Coffee / Cocktail Table, Signed & Dated: A striking example of American Brutalist design, this sculptural round coffee table by Paul Evans ( American, 1937 - 1987) exemplifies the artist’s innovative fusion of furniture and fine art. Crafted in 1969, the piece features a cast bronze patinated base in the rare and coveted “Stalagmite” form—its jagged, organic silhouette evoking the raw beauty of geological formations. Evans' mastery of materials is evident in the richly textured surface, which is both architectural and elemental. The base is signed "PE 69", confirming its authenticity and placement within the most significant period of Evans’ creative output. Topping the piece is its original round glass top, notable for its subtle green edge, offering a clean contrast to the rugged base and completing the composition with elegance. Medium: Patinated bronze base with original round glass top Signature: Engraved “PE 69” on base Period: Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist, 1969 Provenance: Private Estate, New Jersey Dimensions : Table 16" H 42" D Base : 15" H 28 "D About the designer : Paul Evans (American, 1931–1987) Paul Evans was a pioneering American furniture designer and sculptor best known for his bold, sculptural contributions to the American Brutalist and Mid-Century Modern movements. Born in Newtown, Pennsylvania, Evans studied at the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology and later at Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he honed his craft in metalsmithing and design. In the 1950s and '60s, Evans began producing furniture that blurred the boundaries between fine art and design, often working with welded steel, patinated bronze, and richly textured surfaces. He rose to national prominence during his tenure at Directional Furniture, where he introduced a series of experimental, limited-edition lines—such as Argente, Cityscape, and Sculpted Bronze—that combined handcrafted artistry with industrial techniques. His signature works are known for their geometric forms, brutalist textures, and dramatic finishes, often incorporating repoussé techniques, colored enamels, or welded reliefs. Each piece was frequently signed and dated, reinforcing its status as functional sculpture. \Today, Evans' work is highly coveted by collectors and institutions alike, with pieces housed in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Museum of Art and Design in New York, and featured in major auctions and design exhibitions around the world. His visionary blending of craft, art, and design continues to influence contemporary makers and secure his legacy as one of the most original figures in 20th-century American design.
