Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte Glass Slab and Steel Side Table, circa 1940

About the Item

Pietro Chiesa designed this beautiful modernist glass and metal coffee table for the renowned Italian manufacturer Fontana Arte. The piece was crafted in Italy circa 1940. This rectangular coffee table, with its "scalpellato" edging, was produced by the prestigious Milanese house under the direction of Pietro Chiesa. The minimalist yet rich table boasts a large, rectangular, thick glass slab on a lacquered metal base. The stunning thick hand-chiseled glass slab tabletop is glossy on one side and granite and matte on the other. The color and texture of the glass, with its "chiseled" outer edges, catch and refract the light beautifully. The geometric metal base has a gunmetal lacquered finish. There is no visible maker's mark. The table is in good condition. The extra thick 5/8 in glass slab is in its original quality and has a couple of light surface scratches and a few tiny chips on the edges resulting from typical use. They do not significantly affect the overall appearance. Dimensions: 30.69 in wide (78 cm) x 19.69 in deep (50 cm) x 16.57 in high (42 cm). The glass slab is 0.63 in thick (1.5 cm).
