About the Item
The Shale Low Table sits on the floor, and a warm chrome geometric form emerges from one side. This part reflects the light in the room, in a slightly distorted way, and contrasts dramatically with its blackened ash counterpart. The particularity of this piece lies within the textures, one reminiscent of stone, hand carved in solid ash, and the other cool and crisp.
The Shale Collection's name was inspired by the cliffs outside Simon Johns' studio, in the Missisquoi Valley in Quebec. Shale is a type of rock formation that tends to split and erode in layers, leaving behind a layered and random composition of textures. The mapping of the composition of this cliff was sketched on to the pieces of the collection, and carved out in layers, with a router and a chisel.

Simon Johns
Simon Johns is a Canadian fine arts-trained designer working out of the woods in southern Quebec. He approaches design with hands-on studio experiments closer to sculpture than to design. His work draws from relations between the manufactured product and the raw surroundings of the studio's wooded location. His work has been shown at Sight Unseen Offsite for NY Design Week in 2016 and 2017, at Wanted Design Manhattan 2016 and 2017, and at the Toronto Design Offsite (TODO) 2017 and 2018.
