Silas Seandel Volcano Bronze and Steel Coffee Table with Glass, 1977

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

Contemporary New York sculptor Silas Seandel's Volcano coffee table with glass top was made in 1977. The table consists of 7 alternating textured bronze and matte finished stainless steel amorphic rings. Each ring above the base has a series of vertical supports. The finish is all natural. The table's patina is the result of Silas applying his own various acids and heat treatments to the piece. This table was handmade and no two are exactly alike. It's signed and dated.

Silas Seandel (born 1937) opened his Manhattan studio in 1963 after graduating in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. New York’s leading architects were soon queueing up to commission his groundbreaking mural sculptures. He adorned the lobby of the Bell Company with a monumental wall sculpture, and designed a series of metal sculptures for Saks that enjoyed great success, enabling him to devote himself to sculptured furniture from the outset.

His furniture, made almost exclusively for architects and interior designers, is characterized by its supple, organic forms of plant inspiration, sometimes with geometric overtones. Whatever his approach, Silas Seandel stresses the individual nature of his materials. He concentrates on metal (bronze, copper, brass, steel), sometimes supplemented by stone or glass, and employs traditional sculpture techniques: the bronze is cast and moulded, the steel forged and polished, and the stone carved to produce tables, consoles, mirrors or other items of interior decoration.
