About the Item

Contemporary artists Tom Lollar and Jane Manus' "Map of Manhattan" Rectangular Coffee Table. Hand-carved marble, Manhattan fantasy map motif with circular drawings of buildings superimposed on the carved map with a sculptural aluminum base by Jane Manus. Signed by both artists, this table will ship directly from Tom Lollar's studio in New York. About the artists: Thomas W. Lollar is an internationally renowned sculptor and professor of fine arts whose works are represented in a number of public, corporate, and private collections. Lollar grew up in Detroit and was educated at Western Michigan University, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in sculpture, ceramics, and art history. Lollar has taught ceramics and sculpture since 1975 at such prestigious New York institutions as Parsons The New School for Design. He is currently on the faculty of Teachers College - Columbia University. Lollar has received several top-tier honors in his field, including the post of visiting scholar at the American Academy in Rome, a fellowship at the Salzburg Seminar, a fellowship at Jugendstil Design in Austria, and the prestigious Waldo-Sangren Award for Contemporary Ceramics in England. Lollar's work has been featured in gallery exhibitions at Tiffany & Co. and Columbia University and is in the permanent collections of, amongst others, The Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum, New York and The Museum of Arts and Design, New York. Lollar's work has been reviewed in The New York Times and other international arts publications, including Art & Auction and The New York Sun. Jane Manus is a contemporary American sculptor known for her freestanding geometric works. “My work is defined by minimal abstract form; bold color; highly finished, tactile surfaces; and architectural integrity,” she has said. Born in 1951 in New York, NY, she went on to receive her BFA from the Art Institute of Boston, where she discovered steel as her primary material for producing work. Manus was one of the few women alongside Louise Bourgeois and Louise Nevelson, making metal sculptures on a scale similar to male artists such as Mark di Suvero and David Smith. Over the years that followed, Manus switched to working with aluminum rather than steel, preferring its lightness and flexibility. The artist currently lives and works in West Palm Beach, FL. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, the Wichita Art Museum in Kansas, and the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH, among others.

Contemporary American furniture maker and artist Eric Slayton's console is made of weathered Corten steel plates. Each having the qualities and variations Slayton searches for, they are welded together resulting in a beautiful example of wabi-sabi. Steel and its use in architectural applications has always generated an emotional response for the artist, so simply stated it became his pallet. Every piece is a commissioned ‘art as furniture one-off’ that is numbered and signed. The console is part of his Plate Series and will ship directly from the artist's studio. Missisquoi 01 is a numbered and asymmetrical two part coffee or cocktail table, with a space that divides it as the river divides the Missisquoi Valley. The black ashwood was felled, milled and dried near the studio, and the stone is from the river's banks. The stone and plank that support the two parts form a continuous axis end to end, through the divide. The beauty of the Brutalist natural stone contrasts and converses with the delicate craftsmanship of the wood plateau...
