About the Item

Rockets shooting for the Moon, space stations orbiting Earth and other celestial bodies, chimps dancing around a black monolith... the Sixties and Seventies were embued with an idealized (and sometimes rather odd) vision of the future which, all in all, didn't prove quite as right as one could've hoped. We still have no flying cars, don't commute to the moon on a regular basis, nor we've ever been further away than our lower orbit since the last Apollo mission. The richest heritage of that era, the so-called Space Age era, is to be found in the world of interior and furniture design. The shiny, sinuous shapes of tables, lamps and lounge chairs from the era transmits a sense of total adherence to the aestethics of space travel and out-of-this-world adventures. From the most celebrated designer's masterpieces to the most down to earth (pun intended) pieces, every Space Age piece looks like it came straight from inside an orbital station. Such is the case with this rectangular top coffee table, made in Italy around the first mid of the 1970s, with a geometric appearance underlined by the imposing base crafted from bent metal sheet. The smoked glass top is likewise a signature of the era, and is in this case preserved in perfect original conditions. The legs are in good shape too, only showing a minor and expectable patina from the years.
