About the Item

An exceptional large scale museum worthy example of 19th Century American needlework . Created (1840-1854) Depicting a landscape painted with a dark cloudy sky, a longview of painted mountains and forrest background. The left front of the landscape graveyard, embroidered exquisite gold thread and silk needlework collage of foliage, with a smaller marbleized urn grave stone with the pedestal inscribed with 'Sacred to the memory of JANE SMITH who died on the 29th of July in 1838: aged 9 years Sleep, lovely sister- be thy rest! Thy spirit dwells among the Blest (sic) ' The right side expertly embroidered and painted with a harrowing scene under a willow tree with three male loved ones in despair leaning, crowning, eyes covered about the largest tombstone with cross, inscribed with 'In memory of HUGH SMITH who died on the 6th of Feb. 1837 aged 57 and of LOUSIA SMITH who died on the 27th of Feb. 1840, aged 39 R.I.P.' Apparently unsigned, inscribed in ink on reverse 'Made in 1840' Overall condition, not examined out of the frame. it appears that the glass front with painted black border is replaced. The giltwood frame appears to antique and possibly original. The needlework illustration measures approximately 26-Inches x 24-Inches Giltwood Frame 32-Inches x 30-Inches
