About the Item
This long, elegant altar table once provided a place to burn incense or display valuable art objects. It may have been used in the reception hall of a private mansion or in an ancestral shrine. Its distinctive feature is its extreme simplicity -it is fashioned from one plank of Elmwood, ingeniously joined together. The piece still has most of the original oxblood lacquer. This type of furniture is sometimes called "scholar's furniture" as it is without adornment and completely honest.

Chinese Square Dining or "Eight Immortals" Table
Located in Chicago, IL
This sturdy, almost architectural Chinese table is is an excellent example of "scholar's furniture". Scholar's furniture is known for rounded frames that suggest tree trunks and a general lack of unnecessary adornment. The table's floating panel top is held by round corner posts that gracefully transform into square feet as they meet the ground. Arched spandrels connect the legs to the top, suggesting the roof of a building is held up by corner posts. Two drawers are held in the thick waist. The table boasts highly original oxblood lacquer patina, gently rubbed through to the wood over many decades. These tables are sometimes known as "eight immortals...
