About the Item

Originally a balcony railing, this salvaged antique iron has been repurposed into a magnificent console table with Belgian Bluestone top. The railing was salvaged from a French building that would have been constructed in the 1800’s. A two-inch-thick bluestone surmounts the ironwork console. The grayish-blue top meshes well with the black painted iron, which has developed a nice patina from years of exposure to the elements. There is a second layer of teal paint beneath the outer black paint, giving additional character. The iron consists of a series of volute C-scrolls, all positioned at different angles. The facade is joined by rivets and screws, instead of welds, attesting to the age. The middle of the railing has two open scrolls connected by brackets. A downward facing pricket, adorned with roundels, runs through the brackets, terminating in a wavy tip that finishes near the base. On each side of the central section, there are two interlaced C-scrolls. The rest of the C-scrolls are joined by straight bars, forming a broken rectangular border. This recently converted iron balcony gate console with bluestone top can be used in numerous styles of homes. It can be placed against a wall in a hall or entryway to make a great statement piece.

Additions or alterations made to the original: Originally a balcony railing, steel bars have been welded to the sides and back to form a console base. The stone top is not original. Wear consistent with age and use. Wear commensurate to age and use. Visible oxidation and paint losses. Some weld marks are visible where frontage was attached to modern bars. Stone top intentionally distressed. Some scratches. For optimal safety, console should be affixed to a wall.
