About the Item
An extremely charming lacquered Chinese table in lovely antique condition. Traditionally crafted in China, most likely in the early Twentieth Century, this super and versatile piece makes a very stylish console table or a handy desk or bedroom table and will add gorgeous colouring, excellent bygone quality and a sophisticated Oriental aesthetic to any interior.
Crafted from beautiful solid Jumu elm wood and finished in a clear, ruddy lacquer to bring out the wonderfully rich ruddy-nutty-brown colouring and lovely dark grain patterns, this beautiful table was likely sold to Western market around the Mid-20th Century and was marketed by a high-end London retailer in the early 1990s.
Expertly made in the Ming style using traditional craftsmanship, this super table displays lovely mortise and tenon joints to the sides and uses gorgeous mitred joinery to the top, sides and front, creating a sharp and smart, angular look.
The top has a rice-grain patterned rattan inlaid centre and the sides have gorgeous, recessed panels, and the back and drawers are finished in smart black lacquer. The lovely long legs are gently tapered and have traditional Ming horse-shoe feet, while to the front are two handy, good-sized drawers with smart metal handles.
All in all this is a very impressive, versatile and super-smart table. Wonderfully crafted, it will add excellent bygone quality, gorgeous colouring and sophisticated, cultural styling to any setting.
CONDITION
This is in very good condition. Structurally sound and expertly crafted from excellent quality Jumu elm wood, the only minor flaws are some to-be-expected minor bumps and marks knocks to the edges and lacquer finish, which only add to its aged charm. Overall it’s an exceedingly charming and rare table in lovely antique condition and if well looked after it should remain so for generations to come – please see the photos.
