About the Item

PAUL BUFFA Italian architect and designer Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was active between the 1930s and 1960s, and is known for his decor that blends neoclassical style with Art Deco motifs and modernist principles. His pieces often lack hallmarks or markings, making them difficult to authenticate. Born and raised in Milan, Buffa studied architecture at the city's famous Polytechnic, where he graduated in 1927. The following year he founded a design studio together with Antonio Cassi Ramelli, whom he met during a brief job in the atelier of Gio Ponti and Emilio Lance. The two designers' professional debut occurred in 1930, when the duo presented a dining room installation at that year's Triennale. Between 1933 and 1936, Buffa founded his own studio. Designing for Milan's upper social classes, Buffa's designs are handcrafted from the finest, highest quality materials, rivaling French Art Deco legend Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann. Collaborating with talented cabinetmakers such as Mario Quarti, and specialized craftsmen, Buffa slowly managed to introduce modern techniques to the design scene of the early 1940s. The evolution of Buffa's aesthetics, progressively more and more modern, is very clear and linear; from the neoclassical furniture of the beginning, with their complex and intricate decorations, Buffa came to design essential armchairs and consoles with pure lines in the 1960s. In the 1960s he even collaborated with Cassina. In addition to furniture design, Buffa has also dedicated himself over the years to a variety of architectural and interior design projects, ranging from the design of tombs (his very first commission) to yachts for Egyptian royalty, villas, hotels, offices, and so on. Despite his abundant output, and his importance to the evolution of design culture in Italy in the mid-century, relatively little was written about the designer after his death in the 1970s. Nonetheless, the appetite of collectors and enthusiasts for his objects continues to grow on the vintage market, in particular thanks to their extremely high quality and the successful union of classicism and modernity.
