Art Deco Gilt and Polychromed Marble-Top Console Table in the Style of Sue et Mare, France, 1920s–30s
A dramatic and richly detailed Art Deco giltwood and polychromed console table with a black marble top, inspired by the luxurious interiors of Louis Süe and André Mare, pioneers of the French Art Deco movement.
The console features an elegant demilune black marble top, dramatically veined in white, resting on a finely carved gilt and polychromed wood base. The apron is adorned with lavish gilt drapery swags and tassels, anchored by classical pleated motifs, referencing neoclassical and Louis XVI precedents, but interpreted through a bold Art Deco lens.
The legs are shaped in a striking U-form, hand-carved with scrolling acanthus, anthemia, and foliate motifs, all highlighted in gold against a black polychrome ground. The stretcher echoes the same decorative language, unifying the composition.
This theatrical, high-style treatment is characteristic of Sue et Mare’s decorative aesthetic, which married classical ornament with modernist structure, often seen in their commissions for elite Parisian interiors and world exhibitions.
