About the Item

An Art Deco period burl walnut console table of striking form from France c.1930. The exceptional balance of the proportions on this console as well as superb quality of the timber give it an impressive appearance. There is an inherent tension between the pediment superstructure of the back section seen against the wall and the half circle top supported by the sweep of the vertical pedestal as it meets the base that creates a memorable impression no matter from what direction the console is viewed. The amazing visual impact of Art Deco period furnishings lies in the contrast between the clean lines of the profile and the extravagant luxury of the materials used in the construction. In this console the abundant flat surfaces benefit enormously from being sheathed in sizable panels of highly figured burl walnut. The wide expanse of the top features a pair of book matched panels of burl walnut that are entirely enchanting to see because of their natural intricacy. As burl wood is the result of an aberrant growth on a tree the figured timber is quite rare and always in high demand because of its unique appearance. Once burl wood, whether walnut, myrtle, elm or any variety of tree that burls appear upon, has been used to cover a surface the pattern will never be repeated. The second greatest area that features the walnut burl on this console is the back support and the beautiful curved section that begins beneath the apron and sweeps backward in a wonderfully dramatic movement. On this shaped panel the full visual impact of a large burl panel is fully seen to best advantage. The marvelous contrast between the lighter and darker areas is quite beautiful and as it is contained within a straight side on the left and right the riotous movement is even more noticeable. The base of the console is quite curious because it cannot be the same semicircle as the top because that shape of base would not extend far enough forward to enable the table to be freestanding as it is now. Therefore the base is constructed of stacked half ovals that are four in number. Note that the stacked half ovals graduate in size from smallest at the top to largest at the lowest level and this arrangement is in direct contrast to the series of recessed sections seen beneath the top surface. Again, this balance and repetition is a unique quality of Art Deco. The other advantage this console presents is that it is equally impressive whether it is seen from the front or either side. The luminous colour of the timber, the unique arrangement of the components that make up the shape of the console and the lovely clean lines all flow effortlessly together to render this console as desirable today as when it was first designed.
