About the Item

A graceful 19th century Chinese hardwood altar table, with a carved apron. The table features for decorative carved elements, one on each side, between the top and stretcher . Tables of this style, particularly from the Ming and Qing dynasties, were often made from hardwoods such as huanghuali or elmwood. The design of the table, with its clean lines, minimalist form, and elegant proportions, is characteristic of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) period, but this table dates to the early to mid 1800s. Such tables were versatile and used for various purposes, such as dining, writing, or as a display table for decorative items. The mortise and tenon joinery, a traditional Chinese technique used to create strong furniture without nails or glue, is a key feature of this style.
