Chinese Plank Top Longevity Altar with Everted Ends, c. 1850

About the Item

A prime example of Qing-dynasty furniture design, this 19th century table from China's Shanxi province is beautifully proportioned and combines practical considerations with aesthetic principles. Its top is carved from a solid piece of walnut timber, supported by wide legs with inset panels. The side panels contain intricate carvings of a stoic deer, a traditional symbol of longevity. A table with such a grand scale would have originally been placed against the back wall of a large hall or temple where it would have served as a platform for incense burners, candles and offerings.
