About

Part of Richard Haining's Stacked collection, this Console Table has a stance similar to a grand “hood ornament” from a classic car with it’s elongated but balanced symmetry solidly perched on a single foot. The thousands of tiny blocks of wood were placed piece by individual piece, layer upon layer, carefully controlling both the wall thickness and the exterior profile. The tones and veining in the Nero gold marble top perfectly compliment the iron-oxidized salvaged oak used to create this piece. The depth of color in the Stacked base is due to a combination of red and white oak including both virgin and old growth lumber, and the application of an iron oxide wash. This causes a reaction with the tannins inherently found in oak, resulting in a wide range of tones from deep dark black to warm rich browns. The one-of-a-kind patterns made by Richard’s process achieves a quality reminiscent of basketry and mosaic tile work. The finely honed finished surfaces undulate ever so slightly under one’s hand, similar to that of hand built ceramics. Custom requests are welcomed.

About The Maker

Richard Haining

Richard Haining

View Profile
Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
