Early 19th Century Card Table by John McLean

About the Item

A very fine Regency period card table, firmly attributed to John McLean, London, circa 1810. Why we like it Early John McLean furniture, of which this is a fine example, is elegantly designed with clean lines and exquisite yet understated ornamentation. This table is perfect as a console in a narrow hallway or as a lamp table. Having sold several important pieces by John McLean before, we are delighted to add this lovely example to our collection. For an identical pair, see Christie's New York, 17 October 2003, Lot 177 ($28,680). Attribution This elegant card table typifies the high-quality work of the Little Newport Street and Upper Marylebone Street cabinetmakers John McLean and Son (active 1770–1815). The table’s design displays the distinct fusion of Grecian and Egyptian motifs with early 19th-century Parisian fashion. The firm advertised itself as specializing in “Elegant Parisian Furniture,” and many of the table’s elements reflect a clear French influence, balanced with English restraint. The table is crafted from Grecian black-figured rosewood, a preferred wood of the firm for its rich qualities and dramatic contrast to the gilded wood and metal mounts. The most prominent feature of the table’s decoration is the lavish use of cast and shaped brass metalwork, showcasing ribbed ‘Egyptian’ striations. These tablets, popularized at the court of Louis XVI by the renowned ébéniste David Roentgen, were a favored ornament of the firm and also appear on the legs of two sofa tables illustrated in S. Redburn’s John MacLean and Son, Furniture History, 1978, pls. 41A and B.
