About the Item

Early 19th century Italian baroque faux-painted console hails from the master artisans of Venice, the storied city that rises above the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea as if by magic! Inhabited since the 10th Century BC, the city developed to incorporate 118 small islands connected by over 400 bridges. A draw to artisans and artists alike for centuries, some of the world's most famous figures and styles have originated or been inspired by the city. The Baroque style reached a Zenith there, providing inspiration for this wonderful work of the cabinetmaker's art. The tailored architecture of the top with its plain, simply molded apron, contrasts dramatically with the exuberant acanthus leaf ornamentation embellishing the four boldly scrolled legs. A garland of bell flowers is depicted embracing each of the upper scrolled works. The legs are connected again below with a double-lyre stretcher centered with a spiral pineapple finial, then supported below by four lions' paw feet. All of the carved detail is enhanced with gold painted accents contrasting against the slate gray finish. As a stunning finishing touch, the top was faux painted to depict Sienna marble with luxurious veining. Because of the four legged design, this table works in an entryway, hallway, behind the sofa, or wherever your imagination may take you! circa early 19th Century. Measures: 32.5H x 36.5W x 15.5D.

Classical Greek architecture is critical to the design, with elegantly contoured legs culminating in lotus blossom feet. Where the legs join to the apron appear a brace of rectilinear rosettes, and centered between the legs is a panel with drapery motif. The apron sections between these elements are adorned with intricately detailed Greek coin overlay, and the entire structure is enhanced by the patinaed painted finish highlighted with gold colored trim.
