Eric Slayton Corten Steel Console Table, Plate Series, 2010
About the Item
Contemporary American furniture maker and artist Eric Slayton's console is made of weathered Corten steel plates. Each having the qualities and variations Slayton searches for, they are welded together resulting in a beautiful example of wabi-sabi. Steel and its use in architectural applications has always generated an emotional response for the artist, so simply stated it became his pallet. Every piece is a commissioned ‘art as furniture one-off’ that is numbered and signed. The console is part of his Plate Series and will ship directly from the artist's studio.

About the artist:
Eric draws from his passion for nature in creating his minimalist, organic, sculptural works. For fourteen years, he has been designing and fabricating his ideas using an assortment of bold “repurposed” and "industrial" sourced materials. Originally from a studio in Brooklyn, but more recently he moved back to Marlboro Vermont. Each of his pieces are truly unique because he highlights the richness of tones and textures embedded in the discerning material pallet of his projects.
Wishing to share his artistic passion, in 1999 Eric founded a community-based photography center, The Vermont Center for Photography, which still is an important part of the southern Vermont arts community. While living in Vermont, he also began working for international artist and designer Michael Singer. As a friend and lead fabricator for Singer’s large installations, he honed his micro sense to detail and was also encouraged to creatively branch out. This hatched the idea of merging his unique personal story into designing furniture and exploring sculpture.
He began by generating a list of descriptive words to use as guiding principles – words such as dynamic energy, organic elements, and clean intentional lines. In time he added words like rich, steeped, and time-marinated. The resulting synthesis is an aesthetic that truly encapsulates his vision. Slayton uses recognizable industrial materials such as thick steel plates including corten, large form cast concrete columns, and recovered structural wood blocks and planks. He combines these rough raw textures with more refined elements of polished bronze and cast aluminum, mirrored stainless steel, glass, and even animal hide.
The delicate balance between the “rough and refined” requires his skilled eye, and each decision about leaving or removing the materials random character is conscious and deliberate. The resulting pieces have an unassuming simplicity that is well described by a Japanese construct known as Wabi-Sabi, which roughly translates to “a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”. At the end of the day Eric produces pieces that he is personally moved by. Feeling gratification in the unfolding stories that he creates and the personal growth that results from his mediations and practice. Slayton’s clients also tend to be driven by the same motivations and desire to surround themselves with an unassuming simplicity that is honest, thought provoking, and alive.
His creations to date represent only the first few uppermost layers of a thick rich bed of creative detritus. He takes his work seriously with a humble and mindful approach.

About the artist:
Bonnie Edelman was born in New York City. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Connecticut College on an academic and athletic scholarship. Having been raised in a family of artists and architects, Bonnie was always creating. Whether it was sculpture, painting, jewelry making and interior design, she has always had an intense need to express herself through creativity. Fashion was an all encompassing self expression so it was because of this idea of materializing thoughts, desires and inspirations that she decided to devote her career to the editorial side of the fashion industry.
After an internship at Rolling Stone Magazine and then formally starting her career as the assistant to the Fashion Director at Seventeen Magazine, Bonnie moved through the ranks at Glamour Magazine and MTV. She then settled into the position of Travel Editor at Sports Illustrated, where she navigated the world producing exotic and inspiring photo shoots for the magazine’s annual Swimsuit Issue. It was during this time spent in The Islands of the Maldives, Ecuador, Venezuela and Kenya, to mention a few, while working closely with photographers like Sante D’Orazio, Russell James...
