About the Item
An elegant and high quality French 18th century Louis XVI period Mahogany, ormolu, and white Carrara marble console signed J. Caumont JME. The one drawer free standing console is raised by circular tapered fluted legs with fine fitted mottled ormolu sabots and connected by a decorative scallop shaped bottom tier with a lovely pierced ormolu gallery. The frieze display a single central drawer with richly chased berried laurel pulls and tied ribbon keyhole escutcheons framed within a Coeur de Rai ormolu band and flanked by two faux drawers at each side decorated in the same manner. Above is the original fitted white Carrara marble top framed within a pierced wrap around ormolu gallery.
Jean Caumont (1736 - 1800) was a Parisian Ébéniste best know for his high quality pieces such as desks, secretaries, chests and tables predominantly in the Louis XVI and Transitional styles with marquetry scenes and inlaid designs of flowers, branches, instruments in ivory. He became master in 1774 and was elected as Juge de Paix (Justice of Peace) at the commercial court. He retired in 1795 when his son, Claude Emmanuel Caumont took over his workshop.
