About the Item

French Empire mahogany antique pier table. First Quarter of the 19th century with gilt bronze lion mounts. Of exceptional form and quality, this antique French Empire pier table exhibits the finest foundry work in the satin finish mercury gilded bronze mounts. Not overwhelming or in any way excessive, the table is completed with a pair of Lion masks hung on each corner flanking the horizontal wreathe-and-foliage mount on the drawer. The columns are footed in impressive and highly detailed Lion Paw mounts that capture even the most minute of details in the sharp claws and veins of the heel brought to life with beautiful chasing and filing. The result is a table of a simple elegance, one that is not opulent while exuding the refined classicism cherished from this period. The antique console table itself is covered in mahogany veneers of fine tone and grain, each selection match booked to lend perfect symmetry to the table: were a line to be drawn down the center of the table, both sides would mirror each other in almost perfect harmony. The joinery is what you expect to see from the period, thick dovetails joining the golden oak secondaries of the front two corners beneath the charcoal marble or granite top (replaced), the back of the frame locked together with a large series of neat dovetails on either side. The drawer is crafted with the same techniques, deep and perfect dovetailing on the front and back with a pair of large oak boards making up the bottom. The table retains a pair of early, if not original, brackets that allow the table to be mounted directly to the wall to ensure it won't fall forward or shake. The legs are stretched with a shelf-base, this with numerous patches and repairs to the veneers - probably due to sitting next to the baseboard heating and drying out somewhat. The entire form rests over small bun feet. Condition: Marble top a 20th century replacement - when the front edge is lined up perfectly with the table, there is a 1/4" gap at the back; it is not detracting visually or even really noticed, but is worth noting. Patches to veneer throughout - buckling and veneer repairs to right side of base shelf (close ups in the slideshow), dings, chips and abrasions to the edges of the base (particularly the right side), other veneer patching and blemishes visible in close ups in the slideshow. Very slight "twist" such that when placed against the wall one side is just a bit away from the wall while the other side sits flush. Blocks beneath the rear feet are replaced. Columns are secured with philips head screws from beneath. Sturdy and strong. An overall absolutely gorgeous presentation.
