About the Item

An Exceptional and Important Work of French Mid-Century Modern Neoclassical Decorative Arts, this stunning and timeless console or sofa table is in hand hammered and gilt wrought iron with an inset Roman Travertine stone top, by Maison Ramsay or possibly the work of Andre Arbus and Gilbert Poillerat. The timeless piece features long sensuous, tapered and hand hammered legs that delicately terminate into refined blocked feet (sabots). The legs are united by a thin, delicate X-frame stretcher that is elegantly conceived. The leg structure supports an inset top with a sublime lip (apron) that surrounds the top. Roman travertine seamlessly insets into the top. The whole piece was water gilt and has formed a natural, time worn patina with rich golds and touches of of soft, deep worn reds emanating from it. The overall creation is dramatic and sensual, yet effortlessly balanced and harmonious. Great works always symbolize their epoch. This piece symbolizes the creative energy during the French 1940 period that was characterized by great anxiety counterbalanced with the preservation of noble and balanced ideals and harmonious, democratic traditions. Large Elegant French Mid-Century Modern Cross-Form Console / sofa table, in the style of Jacques Quinet, with a sober, modern sensibility in hand wrought iron that has been hand gilt. The cross form console is composed of two intersecting perpendicular rectangular frames which support a top of raw travertine.
