About the Item
Literature: Manni, G. Mobili Antichi in Emilia Romagna. Modena: 1993. p. 254, fig. 545.
Following the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748, which ended the Austrian war of succession, Don Philippe de Bourbon took possession of the Duchy of Parma. Don Philippe was the son of Philip V, King of Spain, and in 1739 he had married Louis XV’s eldest daughter, his cousin Louise-Elisabeth. The Infanta felt that this newly created dynasty of Bourbon-Parma needed a court, modeled on that which she knew at Versailles, and between 1748 and 1759 refurbished the stripped palaces of Parma. Louise-Elisabeth created a colony of French craftsmen, brought out by her from Paris. They included Michel Poncet, Marc Vibert and Nicolas Yon. They worked under the direction of J.B. Boudard, using designs made the architect E.A. Petitot. Thus, there was set up in Parma a veritable Parisian-style faubourg, the production, such as this console table, showing a strong Piedmontese influence.
