Italian Charles IV Console, Genoese School, Carved and gilded wood

About the Item

One of a kind and gorgeous Carlos IV console in carved and gilded wood with fine gold, made in the 18th century in Genoese territory. It has a voluptuous and light structure, emphasized by its extraordinary cabriole legs, the openwork skirt, and the polychrome top in butter yellow. This style combines baroque and rococo influences, reflecting an opulence and sophistication characteristic of the period. What is particularly striking is the profuse carved decoration: an extraordinary mask composed of a sort of bulb surrounded by two plant elements, and from which a fleshy rose emerges. This element is repeated on the other two sides of the console. In the Baroque style, beauty was sought in organic and fluid forms. It is precisely from the large mask that the main element of the openwork skirt, outlined with rocailles, is developed. In addition, in the upper area, an elegant frieze has been carved where leaves framed in rocailles follow one another, like a garland. Exquisite cabriole legs, with an outward curve at the top, adorned with a naturalistic lion mask, and finished with a goat's hoof, details characteristic of the Italian Baroque. The Carlos IV style refers to the artistic and decorative movement that predominated in Spain during the reign of Carlos IV (1788-1808). This style is considered an extension and adaptation of neoclassicism in Europe, greatly influenced by the Louis XVI style in France, with touches of Italian influences, especially from Genoa.
