About the Item
A richly carved late 19th century Irish giltwood console table in the William Kent style, the frieze centered with a dramatic scallop shell, flanked by scrolling acanthus and lion masks, raised on bold lion-paw legs. The original gilding and polychrome now mellowed to a beautifully distressed surface, supporting a fine figured marble top.
While William Kent (1685-1748) first established this monumental style in the early Georgian period-drawing on Palladian architecture and the grandeur of the Italian Baroque-the late 19th century saw a renewed fascination with Kentian furniture. During the age of the Grand Tour, wealthy Europeans and Americans traveled to Italy and England, bringing back not only antiquities but also an enthusiasm for historic revival styles. Kent's dramatic architectural furniture, with its lion masks, shells, and bold acanthus carving, became prized once again for its association with aristocratic taste, classical learning, and the grandeur of England's great houses.
This console embodies that revival spirit: at once architectural and sculptural, it bridges antiquity, the Baroque, and late Victorian historicism. With its strong symbolic iconography-lion for strength, shell for protection-the piece stands as both furniture and statement, recalling the p interiors that inspired generations of collectors.
