Louis XV Style French Wood Console Table with White Matte Lacquer Finish
About the Item
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects.
Peculiar and elegant French console table; the upper top, with a beautifully shaped form, has been originally painted in such a way as to obtain a stone effect; under the top, we find a convenient drawer; the four legs, with a square section, go tapering downward, and on the bottom, they are joined by a top that takes up the profile of the upper one; the entire console table has been painted with a matte lacquer, then skillfully decorated with neoclassical motifs (see the flounce under the upper shelf); very rich but timelessly elegant is the decoration of the lower shelf; all the decorations form a refined and pleasant but not excessive aesthetic complex, in fact, we can deduce that the console table was placed in a country residence of which noble Parisian family; its right size, symmetry, and balance of proportions make our piece of furniture a valuable and versatile object that can be placed without difficulty in any type of environment. The console table was produced in the neoclassical style between 1770 and 1774 by a craft workshop in the French town of Liffon-le-Grand located in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region, an area famous for woodworking. The time of its making is the regency period of Louis XV the "Beloved," but from 1750 until the king's death, a different style of furniture emerged, identified in France as Louis XVI and in the rest of Europe as Neoclassical, in which classical antiquity became a source of inspiration in the search for harmonies and proportions and where straight lines prevailed and the use of decoration was reduced. The neoclassical Louis XVI style, sober and orderly, had legitimacy even before the king's coronation in 1774. Around 1760 signs of a profound renewal began to appear in the structure of the furniture. Slowly curves reduced their momentum to give way to straight lines and surfaces became flat: the taste for classical antiquity, aroused by the archaeological discoveries at Herculaneum and Pompeii, became increasingly sensitive and concentrated in a skillful reworking of classical elements to give rise to the neoclassical style (Louis XVI in France) that would spread from the 1770s throughout Europe. Since the early 1700s, there have been splendid examples of lacquered furniture with patinas in shades of white and ivory; Marie Antoinette, the Bonaparte sisters, and Marie Louise of Austria championed this typically French fashion of making furniture graceful and romantic with patinas in pastel tones: the famous powder blue, antique white, and powder pink. Only a light restoration was carried out on the console table without removing the signs of the time that tell its story and make it fascinating and important. Measures width cm.101, depth cm.53, height cm.80. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

This elegant and refined Italian wrought iron wall console table features an exceptional curvilinear and slender design, aesthetically and symmetrically perfect. The upper top is made of high-quality wood painted black, with few decorative elements that are simple and rationally distributed. This model has the convenient feature of being fixed to the wall by means of two small perforated plates welded to the back edge of the console table (see photo), ensuring the piece of furniture is permanently solid and stable.
The console table was created between 1930 and 1935 in an ironworking workshop in the Santo Spirito district of Florence, Tuscany, Italy. Since ancient times, this part of the city has been the vibrant center of Florence's craftsmanship. Florence has a long history of metalworking, dating back to the Renaissance, when it was an important center for the production of wrought iron. Florentine craftsmen were renowned for their intricate designs and high-quality ironwork, often used for furniture, gates, and architectural elements.
Italian wrought iron consoles have a rich history and are admired for their craftsmanship, elegance, and durability. The evolution of these pieces reflects broader trends in art, architecture, and interior design in Italy, particularly in Tuscany. The use of wrought iron dates back to antiquity, but during the late medieval period, Italian blacksmiths began to perfect their skills, creating functional and decorative artifacts, including furniture.
The Renaissance (14th-17th centuries) was a significant period for art and craftsmanship in Italy. Wealthy patrons, inspired by classical antiquity, commissioned intricate wrought iron work for their homes and public buildings. Tuscany during the Renaissance was the world center for art, culture, science, and crafts. During the Baroque period (17th-18th centuries), wrought iron consoles became more extravagant, featuring bold and dramatic designs with heavy ornamentation. Neoclassicism (late 18th-early 19th century) brought a return to simplicity and classical inspiration; wrought iron furniture had decorative elements inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. From the 19th to the early 20th century, ironwork saw a mix of styles, including the revival of earlier periods and the introduction of new trends such as Art Nouveau, with organic, flowing lines and patterns inspired by nature. In the 20th century, wrought iron console tables continued to evolve, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design principles. Mid-century modern styles (1920-1950) favored a more minimalist design, with simple, clean lines and functional forms. Wrought iron furniture could incorporate glass and wood.
Italian wrought iron console tables were traditionally made by skilled blacksmiths using techniques passed down through generations. This involved heating the iron in forges and shaping it with a hammer and anvil. Italian wrought iron console tables are often considered functional works of art, serving practical purposes while acting as focal points in a room. This particular type of table is versatile and suits a variety of settings, from classic to contemporary. Antique wrought iron console tables...
