About the Item
This French marble console was removed from a Montreal bank. This elegant table is at writing height while standing and is finished on all sides so can stand alone or against a wall. It is well-carved with volutes and slender animal form feet. The marble is said to be from Northern France. It is not quite Siena but of that spectrum. This kind of carving was very much in vogue at the turn of the 20th century. This era was very much the Belle Epoque in Montreal, then Canada's premier city and opulent center of French culture and great financial power. The head offices of Canadian Banks were located here and they vied with each other for the splendor of their interiors. This remarkable console has a Neo-Classical look; It would also be most imposing in a grand dining room or hall.
