About the Item

A wonderfully naive and utterly unique 18th-century console table from the region historically known as the West Indies — now the Caribbean. Crafted entirely from solid rosewood, every element of this piece is hand-hewn, with a sculptural, irregular character that speaks to its deeply human origin. Its construction suggests it may have been built by someone interpreting European furniture forms without formal training — perhaps inspired by an engraving shown aboard a passing ship. The table has a distinctly improvised charm, with 300 years of repairs and make-do craftsmanship visible in the base. From the underside, the story of its survival unfolds in layers of wood, patchwork, and ingenuity. We've carefully taken the piece apart, re-glued and stabilized all structural components, and subtly restored visible surfaces while preserving the remarkable character and authenticity of its history. A soulful survivor that celebrates vernacular craftsmanship, cultural exchange, and the enduring spirit of utility and beauty.
