About the Item

A Highly Important Pair of Adam Period Polychrome Papier Mache and Japanned D-shaped Console Tables in the "Etruscan" Taste, attributed to the workshops of Henry Clay; Birmingham, England. Each table having a "stoved" papier mache top, with alternating palmette and foliate border issuing a demi-lune featured reserve with bell flowers, palmettes and beaded decoration; the conforming frieze with ribbon-tied berried laurel swags with oval paterae above the legs with classical white robed figures, raised on tapering legs painted with berried laurel vines and painted ivory stringing. English circa .1775. Provenance: Mallett's, London, Private Collection USA Attribution to Henry Clay's workshops confirmed by Ms. Yvonne Jones, author "Japanned Papier Mache & Tinware 1740-1940", Antique Collectors Club, 2012. These fine tables are the largest known extant pieces of papier mache furniture from 18th England. The fact that they are an exact and true pair adds their rarity and significance. Scientific Analysis of Fine Art Report 1701 by Jennifer Mass, PhD., Senior Consulting Scientist Rijksmuseum, X-Ray Fluorescence Elemental Analysis of Decorative Etruscan Style Paint on Two Painted Tables Attributed to Henry Clay of Birmingham, c. 1775 Executive Summary The bases of both tables were prepared with paints that are consistent with the fourth quarter of the eighteenth century. This includes the use of umber with a chalk or gypsum filler in the black background, and lead white for the figures and foliate decoration. The painted tops of both tables have had their painted decoration strengthened, likely in the 19th century. The black backgrounds contain barium suggesting the use of a barium sulfate paint filler, available after c. 1820. The white decorations are carried out with zinc white, available as an artists’ pigment for oil painting after c. 1834. As a result, the table tops were likely strengthened in the second quarter of the 19th century. These findings are consistent with the condition of both tables, which show paint loss in the bodies but not the table tops. Both the painted decorations on the tops and the bodies are covered with a natural resin varnish. The data found here do not preclude the tables having been made by Henry Clay, and are consistent with the use/wear patterns commonly observed on eighteenth century painted furniture.
