Pair of George II Carved Giltwood Pier Tables in the Manner of William Kent

$139,500per set

About

This is from the Thomas Devenish Collection (documented below; see provenance). Pair of George II carved giltwood pine pier tables in the manner of William Kent; has later Carrara marble tops; English, circa 1740. The highly carved and ornate eagles with outspread wings rests on rocks and is supported by the original solid plinth with leaf carved moldings. The top frieze is carved with Vitruvian scrolls, bordered by egg and tongue and rope twist carvings. William Kent was a well known architect and designer born in 1685 who revered “The Odyssey” by Homer, and it is thought that he possibly designed an eagle motif table with that influence. This is described in Susan Weber’s book “William Kent, Designing Georgian Britain”. On page 496 she points out the winged eagle monopodium as he conceived it in 1725. The theme became one of the most fashionable subjects for console and pier tables in the 1730s and 1740s. An etching designed by Kent depicting two eagles facing each other atop a low table is illustrated in figure 16.12. These pier tables are made of pine, and on page 469 there is mention of his use of “carved gilt pine” furniture. This gives further support of William Kent influence as regards these pair of pier tables. Kent’s marble tops were imported from Italy, probably as a result of his exposure to that marble during his younger days of study and apprenticeship in that country. William Kent died in 1748. Tables are re-gilt. Dimensions: 34 ½” high 36 ½” wide 18” deep Provenance: Lot #23 Sotheby's New York April 24, 2008 "Tom Devenish: The Collection" Sale "Highy Important English Furniture".
