Provincial Chinese Dongbei Coffer Table

About the Item

The warm tones and active grain of natural pine wood are the focus of this unusually articulated rustic coffer. Made for a provincial home in northeastern China, this sideboard was once used as a home altar to honor loved ones past and present with photos, ancestral tablets and offerings. Crafted in the late 19th century, the expansive table has a simple yet effective design with bold proportions and an impressive solid plank top. Punctuated by a row of four doors and one drawer, the table stresses the horizontal with its overhanging top, extended apron, and low-lying stretcher bars. The paneled front is comprised of a large central drawer and four small doors that open to a large interior compartment. We love its emphasis on natural wood and the depth of character earned through decades of use.
