About the Item

nendo painted steel table from watercolour series. Provenance: Phillips Design: Online Auction 26 July - 2 August 2023 About nendo: With offices in Tokyo and Milan, Nendo is a design studio run by Oki Sato; he describes his mission as to give people small flashes of inspiration: “We’d like the people who’ve encountered Nendo’s designs to feel these small ‘!’ moments intuitively.” This whimsical sentiment translates into bold but beautiful works of interior design—a series of lamps, tables, and vessels made from heated agricultural nets look like bionic jellyfish, suspended in midair, and Nendo’s glass tables with long, thin legs are as striking as something intentionally invisible can be. Nendo has collaborated with a host of luxury brands, including Tod’s, Cartier, and Lexus. About watercolour-collection: An eighteen-piece metal furniture collection inspired by the effects of watercolour paint on a paper surface. To express the idea of paper, the objects are designed to look as though they were cut and folded by hand. In order to create a foundation that resembles paper and to easily blur the ink paint on the objects, the metal frames and surfaces, which are the substrate materials, were repeatedly and thoroughly sanded, applied with primer and finished with matte white paint. To create beautiful colour bleeds as if soaked in the furniture with perfect blurring expressions, all painting was done by hand, section by section, tapping the paint gently with soft pulp paper. This meticulous colouring process was created with a mix of two tones of aqueous inks which takes time to dry, and the objects are finished with a protective clear matte layer that further accentuates their flat paper-like appearance. Pursuing an interest in painterly effects, custom colouring expressions were designed specifically for each object according to its shape and elements. A trial and error method wad used to perfectly place the colours and choose the right paint, tools and colouring techniques. This production process allowed the opportunity to play with animatedcolour effects such as colour that blends in meeting points, overlapping parts that create stains on one another and paint that seems as if dripping down in a waterfall effect on multi-layered objects.

MELT DINING TABLE by Nendo for Wonderglass
By Nendo, WonderGlass
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Melt is a collaboration with Japanese design studio, nendo, inspired by the flexibility of molten glass and the force of gravity. The creation of Melt was a unique and complex production. After watching the craftsmen working in WonderGlass’s workshops, Oki Sato from nendo intended to let the material guide the design process. As a result, a method of laying hot glass sheets over steel shapes and suspending them between steel bars was developed, allowing the material’s natural drape to reveal its form. Melt Edition includes Melt Armchair, Melt Bench, Melt Stool, Melt Chair...

La Manufacture-Paris Trio Table Designed by Nendo in Stock
By Nendo
Located in New York, NY
At first sight, Trio is a side table that consists of three transparent bowls overlapping one another. The opening of each bowl is covered with either a glass, metal or wood top. The shape of the bowl is suggested by a single curved line — seemingly a spectacular feat of balance, yet the result is surprisingly stable, with each shape secured to the others in two different points. This single-leg structure supports several table tops, contrasting with more traditional table designs. TRIO by Nendo Coffee table...
