About the Item

Central Table (c. 1820) Spain, Fernando VII Period (1813 - 1833) Carved and gilt wood, with Cuban mahogany overlays and gilt bronzes. The top is made in Porfido black marble. Measures: 81 x 106 x 54 cm. This magnificent rectangular table / console has a large central drawer. It stands on four legs in a inverted obelisk form which are completed with a crowned female head on the top and a small anthropomorphic feet at the bottom. The heads are looking to opposite direction in each side of the furniture, this means that this is a "central" table (not for being annexed to a wall). This type only was reserved to the most special furniture, because they could be showed from all angles. The orthogonal structure of the furniture, also very reserved in decoration, provides elegance and sobriety with its beauty lines. The drawer handles made in gilded bronze, with Empire symbols as cornucopias and lions are typical of the period. The Empire furniture arrived in Spain with Fernando VII, who returned to Spain after spending in France the reign of Joseph I (who left Spain with the Independence War). On his return, the new King had to redecorate the Royal Palace, badly damage after years of war: desks, beds, armchairs, consoles (as the one that we are showing here)... all type of furniture which had to be reinterpreted by the artisans, who took the forms from the Empire style introducing special features as the use of carved gilt wood, instead the heavy bronzes (as the four heads in our table). The furniture of Spanish Empire period are very rare, and all of them come from a palatial home because only the highest nobility had access to this new trend.
