The glamour of French Art Deco is embodied in this vintage forged iron console table, circa 1930 with gilded highlights and a stone top. While the entire console is symmetrical in appearance with balanced elements it is the pair of recessed supports that give the table its striking appeal. The rectangular stone top rests upon a rectangular forged iron frame with the center design being a pair of crossed arrows with their tips and arrow fletches embellished with gold as well as the four sided medallion that covers the spot where they cross. On either side of the arrows in a separate section on the left and right is an open work pattern centered on a square medallion enriched with gold as well. The contrast between the forged iron and the brilliance of the gold is a dynamic choice and is repeated on several other sections of the console table. There are two vertical supports to this console that curve from the front of the table to the wall as they descend and where they bolt into the wall. Please notice that the legs have an open framework and become more slender as they move away from the top. The open frame is filled with three diamond lozenges along with boldly scaled starbursts behind the base of each support where they terminate. It is interesting to see that the starbursts are not identical in shape as they are hand-forged. This slight asymmetry and the fact that they are also gilded adds to the desirability of the console. Designed to be raised off the ground so it appears to float this French console is as attractive from either side as it is from the front.
