About the Item
The Meridian console made in walnut and myrtle wood was created by invitation for the Fairfield Museum's special exhibition - "Handcrafted- Artisans Past and Present" in 2015.
The construction is traditional mortise and tenon joinery and various elements are shaped and carved to create a sculptural quality. The project presented an opportunity to explore elements and ideas from previous designs and bring them together in new ways. " I am always concerned with how one views a piece: here, the various tapering elements lead the eye from the ground to an apparently floating table top. The negative space around the piece is also very important and helps to strengthen and balance the form. The walnut comes from the town of Meridian from a log that I bought while on a trip to California around 2000. I was fortunate enough to have it milled to my specification while I watched. It has been waiting until the right design presented itself . It has amazing figure and color and is a beautiful contrast to the curly myrtle wood 'shield' which is a focal point of the table."

Black Creek Designs LLC
Since 1992 Thomas Throop/ Black Creek Designs llc has specialized in designing and building one of a kind furniture. Satisfying clients with unique and inspired designs made to the highest level of craftsmanship with the finest woods available. Each piece tells the story of a collaboration between design, process and material. Working closely with his clients, a dynamic dialog ensures an exceptional outcome. In addition to having pieces purchased for significant public and private collections, Throop has won numerous awards for his furniture. He has exhibited widely in galleries and in over 100 juried exhibitions in the US and England, contributed to several books and has been featured in many prominent magazines. The exploration of contrast and balance has been a constant in my work for over 30 years. My desire to create both subtle detailing and bold statements adds to the richness of the designs. Classical training in England gave me the appreciation for the importance of craftsmanship and transcendent beauty of wood in all its variation. More importantly it has given me a basis to engage in the process of designing and making furniture that has an interplay of form and function from the simple to the complex.
