About the Item
The Granero dining table is made from Pennsylvania walnut and features a contemporary trestle structure. It measures 34" x 84" x 29.38"h.
The dining table is based on a commissioned sofa table originally designed for a family room in a converted post and beam barn. I wanted the form and structure of the table to relate to the structure on the building's interior. The vast open main room featured a cathedral ceiling with exposed beams and rafters and I was concerned that a delicate table would get lost in the center of the space as it was to be placed behind a free standing sofa.
It seemed only natural that I draw on one of my earliest influences, the English arts and crafts movement. The visual language of expressed joinery, stout elements and repeating details would fit perfectly in this environment. The use of corbels and chamfers on this trestle form further serve to invoke the nature of the building and the style of the English arts and arts moment.
I did however want to add a contemporary twist by tapering the column an then further accenting them by incorporating long tapered chamfers. This adds some upward visual movement and lightness while still maintaining a strong grounded feeling. Smaller details such as the coved edges of the top and gentle curves on the feet and top rail help soften the overall form just enough to make to approachable and friendly.
Each element is selected, shaped, joined and finished so as to create a unified design.
This dining table is to be featured in an upcoming issue of Fine Woodworking Magazine. The spread will show show the step by step process of how the table was built. It is an honor to have the article published in the premier magazine on woodworking.

Since 1992 Thomas Throop/ Black Creek Designs llc has specialized in designing and building one of a kind furniture. In addition to having pieces purchased for significant public and private collections, Throop has won numerous awards for his furniture. He has exhibited widely in galleries and in over 100 juried exhibitions in the US and England, contributed to several books and has been featured in many prominent magazines. The exploration of contrast and balance has been a constant in my work for over 30 years. My desire to create both subtle detailing and bold statements adds to the richness of the designs. Classical training in England gave me the appreciation for the importance of craftsmanship and transcendent beauty of wood in all its variation. More importantly it has given me a basis to engage in the process of designing and making furniture that has an interplay of form and function from the simple to the complex.
