Paul Poiret (1879 - 1944) A revolutionary French fashion designer, often credited with liberating women from corsets and introducing bold colour, exoticism and a sense of theatricality to early 20th Century fashion. while best known for his clothing - his role in shaping modern interior design and lifestyle aesthetics is sometimes overlooked. He viewed fashion, art and interiors not as isolated craft but as a total lifestyle. His ability to use fashion for interiors and create the notion of a lifestyle brand was at the time bold and pioneering. He was arguably the first designer to extend his aesthetic through his decorative arts studio, Maison Martine, into home goods, predating Coco Chanel, Dior Maison or Versace Home by decades.
