About the Item

In the manner of Robert Adam, having painted decoration attributed to Pergolesi and Cipriani. The semi-elliptical top with molded edge, gold and claret colored anthemion border centering medallions most likely painted by Michael Angelo Pergolesi, depicting a mythological figure of a man holding a globe with a goat seated at his feet, representing Capricorn; the oval panel supported by winged grottesche and flanked by round scenes of putti in idealized landscapes; the medallions enclosed by classical decorative motifs including bellflower swags, laurel wreaths and urns, all set on a cream ground; the frieze of conforming design and decoration, above square tapering legs painted with elongated swags, terminating in block gilt feet. The present table is one of a pair (the other bearing a representation of The Tropic of Cancer) believed to be part of a group of furniture often cited as being among the best examples of Adam Neoclassicism. It represents the collaboration between one of the greatest furniture designers of the 18th century, Robert Adam, and two of the finest Italian artists to come to London at the time, Pergolesi and Cipriani. The painted decoration on the table has traditionally been assigned to two Italian artists closely associated with Adam, Michelangelo Pergolesi and Giovanni Batista Cipriani. Born in Florence, but active in England by 1755, Cipriani was one of the founders of The Royal Academy. He is believed to be responsible for the medallions, while it is Pergolesi who specialized in polychrome ornamentation. Author of Original Designs (1777-1801) and living in England by 1770, Pergolesi helped to revive the “grotesquerie” style of design, incorporating classical elements such as urns, figures and other motifs often derived from ancient Roman and Etruscan frescos.
