18th Century, French Louis XV Wood Flap Writing Desk

About the Item

18th Century, Franch Louis XV Wood Flap Writing Desk Measures: cm H 94 x W 83,5 x D 46; D with the open panel 82 cm, H of the desk top 69,5 cm This elegant desk was made in France in the mid-eighteenth century, in the Louis XV era. The cabinet is entirely veneered in precious wood characterized by a color in which dark red alternates with purple streaks, allowing the cabinetmaker to create particular chromatic games through the specular positioning of the mirrors according to the grain of the wood. The desk consists of two parts, one lower and one upper. The lower part has two drawers embellished with key locks and chiseled and gilded bronze vents. The upper part consists instead of an opening compartment equipped with a small folding door that, rotating on the hinges, can be lowered and raised as needed. When open it provides a comfortable writing surface, lined in leather, and reveals a series of six small drawers and four open compartments, in which to store stationery and small personal items. It is very accurate in the details also inside, entirely veneered and with gilded bronze knobs for the opening of the drawers. Of particular value, the support bars of the flap, when open, are made of iron with terminal knobs in gilded bronze. The writing desk rests on graceful and sinuous legs with a slightly curved shape. All four legs are enriched with golden bronze profiles that originate with a rocaille decoration and end with the tips of the feet richly chiseled. The cabinet is perfectly finished also on the back, a feature that increases its value and allows it to be inserted even in the middle of environments and not only near the walls. The writing desk with flap are very practical and elegant desk models, which have always had a wide spread and are still very sought after today. The small size and the refinement with which this desk was made suggest an important client for a prestigious residence. Of great elegance, this desk is a piece of furniture of value and charm that will make a beautiful show of itself in any environment, giving a valuable decoration. It can be placed in a contemporary home, as an alternative to the common desk. It is ideal to create a private corner, perfect inside a professional studio or anywhere else, from the entrance to the living room, from the attic to the bedroom, giving the entire environment its timeless beauty.
