Chinese Export Black Lacquered Writing Desk with Gilt Landscape and Floral Decoration, Canton, Early 19th Century An early 19th century Chinese Export writing desk, produced for the Western market inspired by the Regency, George III style. The piece has a black lacquer finish with extensive gilt decoration in the Chinoiserie style. The desk has a rectangular form with a raised gallery edge decorated with floral patterns. The main surface depicts a detailed gilt landscape with Chinese pavilions, pagodas, figures, and birds. The apron below is fitted with two drawers that have faceted glass handles. Supported by four turned legs with alternating baluster and reeded sections, the desk maintains a graceful silhouette. The desk is a characteristic example of China Trade furniture, combining a European form with Chinese decorative techniques. Dimensions: 36 in. high (Writing surface: 32 ¾ in.
