Early 18th Century Veneered Walnut Writing desk or escritoire, circa 1715

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

A very fine early 18th Century escritoire veneered in burr walnut, the whole decorated with herringbone and standard cross banding, the fall opening to reveal a finely fitted interior of pigeonholes with oak cased lead paperweights behind which are secret drawers, the fitting below centred by a two door cupboard that in turn opens to reveal a sliding compartment fitted with small drawers, twelve of which are inlaid with the names of the months of the year. Below this cupboard is a slide, the whole being surrounded by more drawers. The finely engraved brasses to the interior retain the very rare feature of being both silvered and gilded lacquer. The fall itself contains a rising ratcheted writing slope covered in antique velvet. Below the fall is the chest section comprising two short and two long drawers, again with engraved brasses. The whole piece has finely cross grained mouldings and stands on well turned feet. The whole piece is of exceptional quality.
