About the Item

This is a beautiful antique Edwardian flame mahogany pedestal partners desk, circa 1900 in date. This superb partners desk is made from solid mahogany with wonderful flame mahogany veneers. One side of the desk is fitted with three frieze drawers and three further drawers to the left hand pedestal with a drawer and a double depth drawer to the right hand pedestal. The other side has two frieze drawers with a central slide and a useful cupboard to each pedestal. It has the fabulous original blind tooled caramel leather writing surface and is raised on a plinth base. Complete with the original working locks and keys. Instill the elegance of a bygone era to a special place in your home with this fabulous antique partners pedestal desk. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully restored in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 77 x width 184 x depth 103 Dimensions in inches: Height 30.3 x width 72.4 x depth 40.6 Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewellery box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although Mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban Mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850s, this particular variety became all but extinct.

The rectanglular top is satinwood crosbanded and inset with a stunning gold tooled green leather writing surface. One side of the desk is fitted with nine drawers, three drawers in the frieze and three drawers in each pedestal. The other side of the desk has three drawers in the frieze with a cupboard to each pedestal, each cupbpard is fitted with a central shelf. The drawers are all fitted withbeautiful brass drop handles, the desk is complete with the original brass locks and key, and is raised on plinth bases.
