About the Item

Early 20th-century Louis XVI Revival library/centre table by François Linke, Paris, incorporating an Apollo “Sun‑King” mask as an iconographic reference. The signature is incised “F. Linke” on a decorative gilt‑bronze acanthus mount beneath the frieze rather than on a corner chute; the hand‑engraved script and placement are consistent with Linke’s workshop practice. Several mounts also bear small internal assembly numbers on their undersides, the sort of marks Linke’s atelier used to keep suites of bronzes together through casting, chasing, and gilding. The rectangular stone top is brèche violette (also catalogued historically as Brèche des Pyrénées, or Brèche Médous), a celebrated Pyrenean marble from the Hautes‑Pyrénées composed of angular clasts in tones of violet, amethyst, mulberry, and slate set in a cream‑to‑grey matrix. This marble was used at Versailles in the 17th and 18th centuries and became a favored specification for Belle Époque makers. The top, weighing approximately 350 lbs., rests on a finely finished mahogany carcass with a frieze enriched by scrolling foliate marquetry banding in contrasting light and medium fruitwoods and edged in gilt bronze beading. Centered to the front is a radiate Apollo mask, crisply chased and matte fire‑gilt. Tapering legs are dressed with deeply modeled acanthus clasps and sabots and are joined by a curved X‑stretcher with twisted‑rope edging and a central acanthus boss. Two full‑depth frieze drawers retain their original locks and are supplied with a key. While all of Linke’s furniture was produced in Paris, the firm cultivated an international clientele and exported important ensembles to South America during the Belle Époque; Buenos Aires, in particular, saw significant Linke commissions for grand residences such as the Palacio Paz and the Palacio Errázuriz Alvear. In that context, the table’s Buenos Aires provenance is entirely coherent. Provenance: acquired from Buenos Aires, Argentina; now in Chicago, Illinois, USA. H=31.5 in. W=64 in. D=34 in. 600 lbs.
