About the Item

This sophisticated Danish Mid-Century Modern flip-top executive desk by Peter Løvig Nielsen, crafted in Denmark during the 1960s, exemplifies the era’s seamless blend of form and function. Constructed from rich teak, the desk showcases the wood’s warm, golden-brown tones and fine grain, with clean lines and angled legs that create an airy, minimalist silhouette. The innovative flip-top design reveals a hidden compartment for storage, while the upper shelf offers open cubbies and a drawer for organizing essentials, making it ideal for a refined workspace. Below, a bank of drawers with sleek, circular pulls provides additional storage, ensuring practicality without compromising style. Perfect for a home office or a collector’s modernist interior, this desk reflects the timeless elegance and craftsmanship of Danish design, embodying Nielsen’s vision of functional beauty. Peter Løvig Nielsen (1921–1985) was a prominent Danish furniture designer known for his contributions to the Danish Modern movement. Born in Copenhagen, Nielsen trained as a cabinetmaker before establishing himself as a designer, focusing on creating furniture that combined practicality with minimalist aesthetics. In the 1950s and 1960s, he gained recognition for his innovative designs, particularly his desks and storage solutions, often crafted in teak and rosewood. Nielsen’s work, including his iconic flip-top desks, is celebrated for its clean lines, functional features, and high-quality craftsmanship. He founded Løvig Design, through which he produced many of his pieces, leaving a lasting legacy in Scandinavian furniture design that continues to be cherished by collectors. Løvig Design, founded by Peter Løvig Nielsen in the mid-20th century, was a Danish furniture manufacturer based in Copenhagen, specializing in high-quality pieces that epitomized the Danish Modern movement. Operating primarily during the 1950s and 1960s, the company focused on producing Nielsen’s designs, which often featured innovative elements like flip-top mechanisms and modular storage. Løvig Design utilized premium woods such as teak and rosewood, emphasizing meticulous craftsmanship and minimalist forms. Nielsen’s desks, including this flip-top executive model, became hallmarks of the company’s output, reflecting a commitment to functional design and aesthetic refinement that remains highly valued in the vintage furniture market today. ---Dimensions--- Width: 64 in / 162.56 cm Depth: 29 in / 73.66 cm Height: 29 in / 73.66 cm This iconic "Flap-Flap" executive desk by Peter Løvig Nielsen has recently undergone a partial restoration featuring a newly refinished desk top. The mix of solid and veneered Burmese teak composition is in remarkably excellent shape given it's age showing some minor nicks and scrapes on the feet (which can be seen in the detail photos provided), as well as minor surface scratches in limited areas (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided). With that said there are no gouges, stains or other damage present whatsoever and the newly refinished top is absolutely stunning in natural light. The desk opens outward to a maximum extended depth of 38" whilst slimming down to a folded depth of 29". All four drawers open and close with ease as does the flip-flap storage piece. The key is missing and a new lock with key can be installed at cost if desired. This versatile desk is ultra-functional, structurally solid and ready for a literal lifetime more of use thanks to it's recent restoration process. Please view all photos and video provided for details on this desk's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
